Course overview

The Harmonised System (HS) is an internationally standardised system of names and numbers to describe and classify specific goods when importing or exporting.

Traders bear the main legal responsibility for accurate classification of their goods, but it is not always straightforward and there are many nuanced considerations which can impact the outcome. A lack of familiarity with the rules leads to errors which can result in incorrect duties and taxes being applied, non-compliance penalties, border delays, seizure of goods or denial of import privileges.

This online course will provide attendees with the essential knowledge and understanding required to classify their goods. It will clearly explain what a commodity code is, when they are used and what they affect. It will then guide you through the classification process, the information required, the common errors trader make and illustrates how to use the UK Global tariff tool to assist with the process.

The course is presented by our international trade expert, David Hooper, who has helped hundreds of businesses to classify their goods in accordance with international import/export regulations.

  • An explanation of the Harmonised System (HS) and how it is used globally
  • Accurately classifying products under the appropriate UK Global Tariff
