Course overview

**Special 15% discount applied for IAPS members - standard fee is £369 +VAT**

The Government has confirmed that from 1st January 2025 private school fees for education services and boarding will be subject to 20% VAT. The rate applies to any fees paid after 29th July 2024 pertaining to the first term in 2025, forestalling any attempts to avoid the tax by paying fees early.

Many private schools won't have registered for VAT before and the administrative burden and processes will be entirely new. The changes present significant challenges for all private schools and associated services and there is very little time to prepare.

This practical and comprehensive six-hour course is essential for anyone involved with tax compliance in private schools or accountants providing services or advice to them. It will guide you through everything you need to know about the VAT system, ahead of January 2025 and will help you to prepare your organisation for these important changes. Crucially, it will explain how to take advantage of the opportunities to recover VAT for the first time on expenditure on taxable supplies and capital projects.

What will you learn?

  • What is the definition of a private school for VAT purposes?
  • What provisions are in place for parents of children with Special Education Needs?
  • What income will become VATable?
  • How will other income streams be treated?
  • What are the key principles of VAT?
  • What is output and input VAT?
  • When and how should a school register for VAT?
  • What are the VAT recovery rules for schools?
  • How do you work out / maximise the VAT you can recover?
  • How are schools affected by the Capital Goods Scheme?
  • How does the associated change to business rate exemption apply throughout the UK?
  • What support is available for those schools that are registering for VAT for the first time?

Who should attend?

  • Operators of private primary and secondary schools or sixth-form colleges who provide education or vocational training services for a fee
  • Anyone responsible for managing VAT compliance in private schools or associated services
  • Accountants providing advice or support to private schools or associated services
  • Those involved in developing strategies designed to take advantage of the available tax incentives
  • Anybody looking for an update on recent changes to the administration of VAT

Extra benefits

  • A course pack containing the information presented on the day
  • A certificate of attendance
  • Complimentary refreshments and lunch provided (classroom courses)
