Course overview

Although most payroll processing is performed by automated software, it is crucial that anyone involved in the preparation or review of payroll has sufficient knowledge to ensure all functions are performed accurately and compliantly.

This comprehensive course examines the rules and regulations and provides you with the knowledge and understanding to ensure that your organisation has a well-run payroll operation. It will be an interactive, fast-paced day – with discussions and exercises to practice and reinforce the knowledge that has been gained. 

By the end of the course you will...

  • Understand how tax codes and NI table letters are allocated
  • Be able to calculate gross pay, gross taxable pay and gross NI’able pay
  • Be able to calculate the resulting gross to net calculation
  • Understand how data is reported through Real Time Information (RTI)
  • Receive an overview of the legislative framework relating to Statutory Sick Pay (SSP), Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP), The Apprenticeship Levy and Student loans

  • How to calculate Standard ‘A’ rate NI
  • The difference between cumulative tax and non-cumulative NI
  • Understanding personal tax allowances
  • The importance of tax weeks
  • How is a tax code calculated?
  • How to allocate tax codes to new starters
  • Using adjustment tables and tax tables in tax calculations
  • An introduction to SSP and SMP including tips and traps
  • An overview of the apprenticeship levy, student loan processing and court order handling

    Jo has more than 20 years’ experience of working in payroll roles, most recently for a software house with many external clients. She now runs her own payroll services company and delivers consultancy and training on payroll issues for a variety of clients.
